Digitizing the construction industry

The Karriereführer, a career magazine for college graduates, interviewed Prof. Brell-Cokcan on the future of the construction industry. The ongoing digitalization and increasing robotisation of architecture and civil engineering is increasing the fields intersection with topics from mechanical engineering and computer science. This interdisciplinary work and the major challenges that lie ahead for our built environment make this field an interesting and rewarding option for students deciding upon what to do with their lives.

Individualized Production in Architecture at the Work 4.0 concluding conference

In order to create a public and professional dialogue concerning the future of work in our society, the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS) started a dialogue process Work 4.0 under the slogan “Re-imagining work”. At todays concluding conference we are exhibiting our work within the field of human robot collaboration.

With our work we want to show that the construction site of the future requires connecting the digital with the physical world. Our exhibit has previously been part of Robodonien 2016 and the orientation week at RWTH Aachen University. The exhibit is supported by KUKA Robotics.

Our KMR iiwa will be demonstrating how a robot can perform assembly tasks using existing digital models while being adapted on site through human robot collaboration. If you would like to see this in action feel free to pop by during todays conference or take a look at the video from our workshop during orientation week.

The concluding conference for Work 4.0 is being live streamed.

Orientation Day 2016

Each year during orientation week the first year students of architecture get together for a project day. This year the 270 students were given instructions on the construction of elements from the Kinetic Weaving project. Armed with seemingly endless amounts of sticks in various sized and hundreds of meters of tape they set out to build their own folding structures.

During the afterparty the KMR iiwa performed the same assembly task by interacting with the students. Using knowledge from the digital model the robots execution can be guided and improved using haptic programming.

We had a lot of fun that day and would like to thank the student body for organising the day and all the students who took part. We wish you lots of success with your studies at RWTH Aachen University.
